With the exception perhaps for the itinerary programs of pilgrimage groups with specialized interests, or pilgrim groups comprised of those that have visited Israel many times, nearly all holy land Israel itineraries will include basic pilgrim travel components: Jerusalem, the Via Dolorosa, the Galilee and the Sea of Galilee; Nazareth and Bethlehem.
The Christian Quarters occupying the northwest quadrant of the four quarter’s inside the walled Old City of Jerusalem, is the epicenter of Christianity worldwide. It’s the first part of Old Jerusalem most pilgrims visit, as it lies beyond the Jaffa Gate, an entrance which traditionally has welcomed Christian pilgrims for centuries.
For pilgrims visiting Israel, crossing into Bethlehem from Jerusalem -and back, is not a complicated matter, especially since the terminal and transit system between the two cities has been upgraded by establishing special lanes for tourist moving between them. The Israel Ministry of Tourism has also been promoting cooperation with private Israeli and Palestinian partners to develop the crossing points, and ministry representative is always present or on call at the border crossing to deal with any unanticipated matters.
